The present thesis aimed first to study the linguistic and socio-cultural challenges faced in the teaching /learning of reading in French as a foreign language in the Algerian high school through a(n) (content) analysis of the official discourse (the syllabus, the syllabus
accompanying documents, the teacher's guide).This analysis has revealed that these challenges revolve around the following issues: citizen education, the promotion of the cultural and heritage dimension, the development of pupils writing proficiency, and the reinforcement of the fundamental competencies in reading and writing. Then, the thesis
studied the way in which these challenges have been implemented in the locally designed high school textbooks in the form of reading texts and activities, including the values transmitted to new generations through those texts.
