Abstract:
The issue of urban growth in Algeria has become a complicated phenomenon that threatens the harmony of urbanism in Algerian cities in general and in the city of EL-Eulma in particular. For the latter, like many other Algerian cities, has been subject to a fast-paced growth and expansion of urbanization since the Algerian independence. This change is mainly due to a number of factors which include the legislative, historical and economic aspects, land use planning and urbanization, social and cultural motives, as well as the importance of the geographical location of the city at local, national and regional levels. The choice of our subject of study aims at bringing the interest of local authorities to take action by giving particular attention to a city that represents an important commercial and investement pole which would result in solving its present issues. Therefore, El-Eulma becomes the perfect example of the most challenging Algerian cities in terms of inhabitants’ future expectations. Although it is difficult to analyze the state of affairs of the city in question, the prospects and the future trends to catalyze its urban growth revolve around establishing a clear urban policy based on analytical criteria and throughly studied standards. Such an urban policy would allow the emergence of a harmonious urban growth congruent with the conventional principles of environmental design and with its inhabitants prospects and expectations.
