dc.description.abstract "The purpose of this study was to determine changes in plasma concentrations of 19 biochemical parameters of lipid, protein, carbohydrates, minerals metabolism and free thyroxin in two strains of fast growing broiler chickens: Isa 15 strain and Arbor Acres strain reared in the same conditions, and then compare the growth performance and blood profiles of these two groups of animals. Broilers Arbor Acres strain showed a greater food consumption and body weight at slaughter, with a higher mortality and consumption index when compared to Isa 15 strain. Only concentrations of urea, ALAT, and total bilirubin remained very low and did not show any significant changes. It should be noted that the determination of albumin by spectrophotometry using Bromocresol purple has been inadequate on avian blood samples. The plasma protein electrophoresis provides in this case a more accurate concentration of albumin and other plasma proteins measured. Significant differences (p <0.05) between the two strains were observed for plasma glucose, uric acid, creatinine, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, chloride, and ASAT. Thyroid hormones influence major metabolic pathways, and are therefore involved in the regulation of the metabolism of fats, carbohydrates and proteins. We investigated the relationship between plasma free thyroxin and glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol, and total plasma protein. The results of this study suggested that there were no significant correlation between free thyroxin and glucose or lipid profile. However, a significant correlation between plasma levels of free thyroxin and total protein has been described in Arbor Acres strain (r = 0.42, p = 0.01). We have also tried to provide reference ranges for blood biochemical parameters measured in Isa 15 strain and Arbor Acres strain. The obtained results will be useful for assessing the health of the animals, so that the genetic potential of the bird is fully expressed. They will extend the current knowledge on changes in blood biochemical profile in broilers."
